Please describe your project in more detail.

Charlton-Pollard Elementary is located in Beaumont, Texas. 92% of students at Charlton-Pollard Elementary qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In class, students are learning about soil composition particular to their area. During their visit to Big Thicket National Preserve, students will engage in ranger-led, inquiry-based activities to help provide context to what they are learning. Students will determine the pH and percolation of different types of soil, then compare and contrast different types of plants that thrive in these soils. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in a stewardship project, planting native trees in the national preserve.

This gift will help cover bus transportation for 32 4th-grade students to visit Big Thicket National Preserve. Every dollar raised will be matched 1-to-1 by the National Park Service Centennial Challenge Fund to cover other fees associated with this trip.
